Water And Weight Loss — Is There A Connection?

Fat Loss 4 IdiotsYou never want to pass up any easy, useful method to lose weight, right?  What about something as simple and low cost as water?  Is there really a connection between drinking water and weight loss?

Of course you know that to lose weight you need to take in fewer calories each day than you burn up.  Since water has 0 calories it makes sense that you can drink as much as you want without putting on weight.

If you currently drink sugary soft drinks you know that a typical cola contains 150+ calories for 12 ounces.  If you’re guilty of getting things like “Big Gulps” you can be consuming over 400 totally useless calories in one drink!

Maybe you prefer diet soft drinks — but many studies have shown that the artificial sweeteners in these drinks cause a “boomerang” effect by making you crave sweets.  This puts you on a never ending cycle of overeating!  And, these drinks are still loaded with artificial ingredients that do nothing for you!

It’s just a simple fact that water and weight loss go hand in hand.  You don’t have to decide if you can have another glass of water — you can have water any time you want!

You might be one of those people that say they just don’t like the taste of water and, depending on where you live, plain old tap water can have a nasty taste.  But you can buy bottled water that isn’t that expensive.  In my opinion the cheap versions taste just as good as the “designer” brands!

Many times drinking a glass of water instead of reaching for a snack can satisfy your hunger.

Water keeps your kidneys functioning at their optimal level.  If you’re not getting enough water to keep your kidneys working properly your liver will be forced to work overtime which means it won’t be as efficient at metabolizing fat.

Water will also improve your muscle tone and, in fact, your weight training workouts will be much more effective when your muscles have the water they need.

Aside from the connection between water and weight loss, drinking water helps keep you alert by enhancing brain function. And another great benefit of drinking water is what it will do for your skin!  By flushing out the impurities your complexion will be clearer and younger looking.  Keeping well hydrated allows the skin cells to stay plumped up and prevents that saggy, aging look.

So how much water do you need?  I’m sure you’ve heard the standard “eight glasses a day.”  This is a good rule of thumb and you should spread these out over the course of the day.  Some studies have shown that drinking cold water can boost fat burning but just drinking the water — warm, cold — whatever you prefer — is critical.

Many weight loss plans suggest you drink eight ounces for every 25 pounds of excess weight you have to lose.  If you think this is just too much for you start out slow and build up to the optimal levels.

When you don’t get enough water your body starts storing all the water it can and that leaves you with that uncomfortable bloated feeling.  When you drink enough water it lets your body know there is no drought and it will let go of those water reserves. So you can see that water and weight loss have a definite connection.

I used to be a cola “junkie” but once I switched to water I absolutely “gag” at the sweet taste of soft drinks now.  It’s just another habit that you can easily change if you want to lose weight!  Start slow and before you know it you’ll find that nothing quenches your thirst like a nice cold glass of water!
