There have been a lot of studies done on the importance of breakfast and they all come to the same conclusion — thin people tend to eat breakfast, overweight people tend to skip breakfast.

When you skip breakfast you are much more likely to have a midmorning crash.  That can lead to snacking on unhealthy foods and if you make it all the way until lunch it can result in overeating.
Skipping breakfast can make you cranky and craving sugary and fattening foods.  So if you thought you were saving some calories by not eating in the morning you will usually end up consuming far more calories than you were “saving.”

When you get up in the morning you need to eat to get your metabolism going for the day.  If you skip breakfast your body will just keep storing fat like it did when you were sleeping.  Eating gets your fat-burning enzymes working.

If you tend to eat late at night you probably aren’t very hungry when you wake up.  You need to establish a habit of cutting back on your nite time eating — your body just can’t burn off food as quickly when it’s sleeping.  You can start out slowly with your breakfast.  You don’t even have to eat as soon as you wake up but you should try to eat something within the first couple of hours of waking up.

If you aren’t in the habit of eating breakfast you can start out small, maybe having yogurt, a piece of fruit or a whole-grain muffin.  Once you get more used to eating in the morning you can go for other foods.

And of course there’s no rule that says you have to have “breakfast food” for breakfast.  Just try to choose foods that are low in fat and high in whole grains.  A turkey sandwich on whole grain bread can make a healthy breakfast if you need something on the go.

Healthy shakes can be a great breakfast choice using frozen fruit and skim milk.

Avoid sugary cereals or pastries — they can lead to a real midmonring crash!  Oatmeal and high fiber cereals are perfect choices since they keep you full longer, keep your metabolism working and help you avoid cravings.  Adding fruit can help increase your fiber.

Always have some protein, if you only eat carbs you’ll find yourself feeling drowsy in a few hours.

Just be careful in your breakfast choices.  Muffins can be a quick fix when you’re short on time but make sure they’re healthy.  Read the labels and make sure they’re not loaded with fat even though they might claim to be “oat bran” muffins.

The importance of breakfast cannot be overstated if you’re trying to lose weight.  By taking the time to make smart choices in the morning you’ll be setting the tone for the entire day, you’ll keep yourself from suffering those midmorning cravings and you won’t be as likely to overeat on poor choices at lunch.
