How To Stop Overeating
It’s hard to diet. You feel deprived all the time. You feel hungry all the time. You think it’s a lack of willpower when you fail. But if you want to know how to stop overeating you need to become aware of your eating habits.
Food triggers come in many forms, both conscious and subconscious. The triggers can be something as trivial as the time of day or something emotional like when someone hurts your feelings or makes you angry. Most of the time you are completely unaware of why you overeat so it’s hard to know how to stop overeating.
There are a lot of reasons why you eat. First (and the only real reason you should eat) is hunger. But you might eat because you’re feeling stressed at work or at home. You might eat out of anger and frustration. You might eat to celebrate a special occassion or you just might eat out of habit, like when you sit down in front of the tv.

In order to learn how to stop overeating you need to become aware of the reasons you eat, what you eat and when you eat by keeping a food journal. When you keep track of your eating habits you can start to see the patterns that you might not have been aware of before.
Try keeping a journal for a couple of weeks and write down everything you eat — and I mean everything! Even that handful of M&M’s you grabbed as you passed your co-worker’s desk!
The things to keep in your journal are:
- what food you eat
- how much food you eat
- time of day you eat
- your mood when you eat
Once you determine what your patterns are you can start to work toward changing those patterns for the better. You will soon become more aware of the reasons you are overeating.
Start asking yourself these questions:
- am I really hungry?
- do I really want or need this particular food at this particular time
- am I upset over something or stressed
- what’s my mood right now
- am I eating to comfort myself
You can learn how to stop overeating when you take control of what, when and why you eat. You need to identify your eating patterns before you can gain control.
